THE EDGE SPEECH AND DEBATE CLUB

Region IX, The National Christian Forensics and Communication www.ncfca.org

The Edge Speech and Debate is happy that you contacted us! We are a group of Christian parents volunteering to help our children learn to be comfortable with their speaking ability and be able to use the wonderful voice God has given them. Since parents participate while their children develop this skill, we are all able to share the love of Christ better.

Participating in The Edge can be used to organize and boost most of your other academic areas. We have a strong focus on every area of language arts, since all kinds of speeches involve the same planning used for essay and research writing, and interpretive scripts incorporate a heavy focus on literature and grammar. Apologetics teaches logic and vocabulary, as well as Bible. Debate and Extemporaneous speaking involve studying history, current events, philosophy and logic (again!). Science and history provide the subject matter for many researched scripts, which can double as projects used as evidence of instruction in those areas for portfolio reviews.

During the fall we focus on creating scripts for speeches and debates (research, writing, editing and formatting) and introduce the skills necessary for presenting them well (movement, volume, enunciation, and memorization). We also work on organizing ideas clearly, connecting with an audience, and understanding why and how God wants us to speak. Late in the semester there may be in-person or virtual opportunities to participate in practice tournaments.  During the spring semester we fine-tune our abilities by preparing for tournaments, attending tournaments, and using the feedback we get from tournaments to revise and improve our skills and scripts.

Please read all the information on https://theedge-ncfca.org/welcome/application-info/. The registration fees are for a whole family, and include the whole year of club meetings (about 17 including one or two Speak Outs for speech, and around 30 for debate). We may ask for families to sign up for snacks during the year using sign up genius or a google docs form. We intend to participate in some NCFCA Region 9 (Maryland, Virginia and North Carolina) events; contact them through www.ncfca.org if you have questions about their fees.

Please view the Link to Guides from NCFCA; especially item #2:
